  • 1st Grade - Curriculum 

    In Religion, students will:

    1. Read stories from the Bible that tell of Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection.
    2. Learn and pray different types of prayers; formal and informal. 
    3. Identify the three persons of the Holy Trinity
    4. Participate in the Liturgy.
    5. Understand there are seven sacraments. 
    6. Recognize the role of family life and in the Church community. 
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Read and understand stories from the Bible.
    2. Understand formal and informal prayers.
    3. Correctly make the Sign of the Cross. 
    4. Correctly say the Sign of the Cross, The Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
    5. The Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    6. Participates in Mass with song, prayer, and reverence (genuflecting & blessing with holy water).
    7. Introduction of the Seven Sacraments.
    8. Introduction of the Ten Commandments.
     

    In Reading and Phonics, students will:

    1. Read on level books by themselves.
    2. Use strategies to figure out unknown words.
    3. Sound out all the phonetic sounds in a word.
    4. Use sounding out rules when sounding out words to read.
    5. Use comprehension strategies to check understanding of text.
    6. Make connections, inferences, and predictions.
    7. Retell a story in sequential order.
    8. Retell key details of a story. 
    9. Be able to read for at least 20 minutes in one sitting. 
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Letter sounds; consonants, short and long vowels.
    2. Letter combinations; digraphs, blends, and vowel teams.
    3. Word endings: ed, ing, er, est.
    4. Sight words.
    5. Fiction and nonfiction.
    6. Parts of a book (table of contents, chapters, page numbers, etc.).
    7. Story Comprehension; compare and contract, cause and effect.
    8. Word Webs.
     

    In Writing and Grammar, students will:

    1. Write all uppercase and lowercase letters correctly and neatly.
    2. Use best sound out skills to spell words.
    3. Use spelling rules when sounding out words to write.
    4. Identify and differentiate between nouns and proper nouns, verbs, and adjectives. 
    5. Construct and deconstruct contractions.
    6. Add capital letters and ending marks in a sentence.
    7. Use capital letters for the beginning of a person's name and the word "I".
    8. Write a topic sentence and three (3) detailed sentences that give more information about the topic. 
    9. Reread sentences and revise sentences.
    10. Share information in writing and use details. 
    11. Follow a writing process to plan a first draft by brainstorming and recording key ideas. 
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Types of Sentences.
    2. Proper punctuation dependent on sentence type.
    3. Dictionary Skills.
    4. Nouns, plural nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, contractions, synonyms and antonyms.
     

    In Math, students will:

    1. Identify numbers 0 - 120.
    2. Find numbers 0 - 100 on a hundred chart.
    3. Add and subtract numbers (up to 20) using pictures, counters, and/or a number line.
    4. Write fact families.
    5. Compare numbers using symbols (<,>,=)
    6. Use addition strategies to quickly figure out the answer 
    7. Use subtraction strategies to quickly figure out the answer 
    8. Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s 
    9. Identify the ones place, tens place, and hundreds place in numbers 
    10. Determine between even numbers and odd numbers.
    11. Identify flat shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, ) and solid shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid, cube, rectangular prism).
    12. Explain the features of the solid shapes (how many flat faces, how many corners).
    13. Make graphs with up to three categories.
    14. Identify information on a monthly calendar. 
    15. Read an analog and digital clock to tell time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. 
    16. Identify coins and add coins to create amounts within one dollar.
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Number sense: number words, number order, ordinal numbers.
    2. Addition and subtraction facts up to 20.
    3. Place Value: tens, and ones.
    4. Data and Graphing; bar graphs and picture graphs.
    5. Quarter, dime, nickel, and penny.
    6. Shape and number patterns.
    7. Measuring with a ruler.
    8. Measuring using inches and centimeters.
     

    In Social Studies, students will:

    1. Identify the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
    2. Describe how decisions are made within schools and local communities. 
    3. Describe roles and responsibilities of people in local government (i.e. judge, mayor, police, city council, etc.).
    4. Use a key on a map to identify various parts of the map.
    5. Identify symbols of the United States.
    6. Learn different cultures’ holiday traditions.
    7. Use a compass to identify cardinal directions on a map. 
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Rules and laws in school and community.
    2. Maps
    3. National Holidays: President’s Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
    4. Timelines and Calendar; past, present, and future.
    5. Various countries' cultures, customs, traditions, and celebrations.
     

    In Science, students will:

    1. Brainstorm, develop, test, analyze, and redesign a project.
    2. Identify different types of beaks and how the various beaks allow birds to survive on different forms of food. 
    3. Identify the life cycle of a plant.
    4. Make and record observations.
    5. Design and build a device that uses light or sound.
     

    Students will achieve these goals through content and skills such as: 

    1. Designing a bird's nest based on collected materials. 
    2. Needs of plants-soil, air, water, and sunlight.
    3. Parts of plants-roots, stems, flowers, and leaves.
    4. Differences between parent animals and baby animals.
     

    In Personal Skills, students will:

    1. Complete tasks independently. 
    2. Follow multi-step directions.
    3. Tie a shoe.
    4. Communicate with another student if there is a conflict.
    5. Relate experiences in detail and in a logical order.
    6. Organize school supplies.
